  18. <p>     Running hard for re-election in North Carolina, Senator
  19. Jesse Helms is enlisting the so-called dirty pictures he has
  20. so publicly opposed. At a barbecue in Burlington, Helms' speech
  21. included an invitation--men only, please--to examine three
  22. portfolios guarded by his assistants. "You won't look long
  23. because you just ate," Helms warned the curious, who stepped
  24. forward to peer at reproductions of the Robert Mapplethorpe
  25. nudes from the show partially funded by the National Endowment
  26. for the Arts. "Tell me whether you resent taxpayers' money
  27. going to this!" boomed the Senator.
